Filled with warmth at the generosity of friends.
My teammate, Betty, and I hosted a fundraiser last week. I was nervous in the weeks prior because there was little response, low ticket sales, and I was unsure how many people would show up. We secured lots of good prizes that I feared would go to waste.
But friends came out and showed their support. We had 25 people, an intimate group, but certainly enough for good conversation, fun, and a thriving trade in raffle tickets. All in all, Betty and I netted $1,050, with $525 going to each of our fundraising. If I can find someone to match the cash, I'll be $1,000 closer to my fundraising goal. This was an uplifting moment in a hectic week.
I'm seeing my opportunities to spend quality time with close friends shrinking as the weeks go by and my training gets longer and my days get busier. This was a rare moment when I could see people who make me laugh and who fill my heart with their willingness to give their resources to support me and this cause that's become so important to me.
I'm reading a book about introverts right now for book club, and my head is buzzing about the subject. As an introvert, I find big group events like the fundraiser I hosted to be very challenging. The book talks about how introverts thrive when they are able to find a happy medium, a "sweet spot" where they have enough stimulation to not be bored, but not enough to trigger anxiety. I'm naturally inclined toward one-on-one conversations, and having so many people I want to talk to in one room pushes me toward an anxious place, but I am truly soothed by the thought that those people in that room are there purely to support me (and Betty) and the cause that's bigger than both of us.
Thursday was a good day, and I'm feeling very grateful right now.
